Turning your ideas into reality
Building an Outdoor Entertaining Space
That Feels Like an Extension of Your Home
For many homeowners, the backyard has become more than just a place to grill or relax. Across Raleigh, Cary, and Chapel Hill, outdoor entertaining spaces are being designed as true extensions of the home—spaces that support gatherings, everyday living, and year-round enjoyment.
The difference between a backyard that looks nice and one that lives well comes down to planning, layout, and construction. An outdoor entertaining space should feel intentional, comfortable, and connected to the interior of your home—not like a separate project added later. Here’s what homeowners should know when designing an outdoor area that blends seamlessly with how they live and entertain.
Start With How You Entertain at Home
The most successful outdoor entertaining spaces begin with a clear understanding of how you already use your home. Otto’s Design & Contracting approaches outdoor design by first learning how homeowners host, relax, and move through their interior living spaces.
Do you host large gatherings or prefer smaller, casual get-togethers? Do meals happen around a dining table, a kitchen island, or a fire feature? Answering these questions helps define the size, layout, and features of the outdoor space. According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, outdoor environments perform best when they’re designed around real behaviors rather than trends:

By aligning the outdoor layout with your lifestyle, the space feels intuitive and inviting instead of oversized or underused.
Create Strong Indoor-Outdoor Flow
One of the defining characteristics of a well-designed entertaining space is how naturally it connects to the home. Visual and physical flow matters. Outdoor spaces that feel like extensions of the interior typically align with doors, windows, and primary living areas.
Design strategies that strengthen flow include:
Locating patios directly off kitchens or living rooms
Using similar or complementary materials indoors and outdoors
Aligning ceiling heights, rooflines, or structural elements
Keeping transitions level and accessible
When outdoor spaces mirror the scale and organization of interior rooms, they feel purposeful rather than disconnected. This sense of continuity is a major factor in perceived value and daily usability.
Define Entertainment Zones That Work Together
A great outdoor entertaining space is rarely just one open area. Like the inside of your home, it functions best when divided into zones—each with a clear purpose—while still feeling cohesive overall.
Common zones include:
Cooking & Prep Areas – outdoor kitchens or grills near dining spaces
Dining Areas – tables with adequate circulation and lighting
Lounge Areas – seating around fire features or under covered structures
Transition Paths – walkways connecting zones without disrupting flow
Thoughtful zoning allows guests to move naturally through the space without crowding or confusion. According to the National Association of Realtors, outdoor spaces that feel organized and functional tend to leave stronger impressions on buyers and guests alike:

Build With Comfort, Durability, and Climate in Mind
Outdoor entertaining spaces must perform in real conditions—heat, rain, foot traffic, and seasonal changes. Material selection and construction methods play a major role in how comfortable and durable the space feels over time.
Covered areas provide shade and protection, while proper grading and drainage prevent water issues. Durable hardscape materials like stone, pavers, and concrete ensure the space holds up under frequent use. Incorporating energy-conscious elements such as efficient outdoor lighting can also improve long-term comfort and operating costs, as outlined by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Saver program:

All structural components should be built in compliance with North Carolina State Building Codes to ensure safety and longevity:

Why Professional Design-Build Makes the Difference
One of the most common reasons outdoor entertaining spaces fall short is fragmented planning—different contractors handling patios, structures, landscaping, and lighting without a unified vision. A design-build approach ensures everything is planned together from the start.
Benefits of this approach include:
Cohesive material and design decisions
Proper sequencing of grading, hardscaping, and construction
Fewer surprises during construction
Better long-term durability and maintenance outcomes
Responsible material handling and site practices also matter. Otto’s follows sustainability-focused construction principles aligned with guidance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency:

The result is an outdoor environment that feels complete, intentional, and built to last.
Finishing Touches That Make the Space Feel Like Home
The final details are what turn an outdoor entertaining space into a true extension of the home. Lighting layers create ambiance, furniture placement encourages conversation, and landscaping softens hard edges.
Popular finishing touches include:
Accent lighting for evening gatherings
Built-in seating or planters
Pergolas or pavilions for shade and structure
Fire features that anchor the space
Landscaping that frames views and provides privacy
When these elements are chosen as part of the overall design, the outdoor space feels just as comfortable and intentional as any interior room.
